D. D. Baxter Master

Monday Sept 29th 1862

Commences with strong wind from NE. Lying off and on at Brava. Sent ashore 10 empty water casks to fill with fresh water. At 6 pm we hoisted it aboard. Capt. Baxter came aboard with it. I have got so sick and out of patience with the men. I sincerely hope that we shall not see land again for a while. The crew and black Portuguese1 have nearly set me crazy.

1 Portuguese- and Cape Verdean sailors served aboard the Solon as regular crew members—holding roles such as cook, shipkeeper, and seamen—providing important context for John T. Duntlin’s reference to “black Portuguese” in the ship’s log.
